THIS year’s staging of the Dennis Brown Birthday Tribute concert scheduled for the Waterfront in downtown Kingston has hit another snag and will not take place tomorrow.
Show organiser Junior Lincoln said no permit was granted to stage the event and, therefore, a new date would have to be decided on.
“The election has really had an impact on all the open-air, mass events and this concert is no different. We have not received the go-head from the police or the UDC (Urban Development Corporation) and so we cannot proceed with the plans for this year’s concert,” Lincoln told Jamaica Observer.
Lincoln said what compounds the situation is that each time the concert is postponed, it becomes more difficult to guarantee the artiste line-up as some have contractual arrangements to perform elsewhere.
The event, which forms part of the celebrations for Reggae Month, was originally set for February 21 but was rescheduled as it came too close to the general election held on February 25.
Dennis Emmanuel Brown, also known as the Crown Prince of Reggae, was born on February 1, 1957. He was known for his smooth, lover’s rock brand of reggae and hits including Should I, Money In My Pocket, Cassandra, and Wolf and Leopards.
He died on July 1, 1999 at 42.
